Thesis title: Detection and recognition of the circular and elliptical patterns

The thesis focuses on the ellipse recognition problem. The desired techniques apply to various aspects of this issue and can be used not only for ellipse detection in images (two dimensional objects) but also in higher dimensions.
The main results obtained within the framework of the thesis are:

  • a new algorithm to choose the ellipse prototype from a set based on the Mahalanobis distance properties,
  • a new algorithm for detection of elliptical shapes with given parameters based on information theory,
  • a new elliptical and circular measure which uses only the first three moments, of a given set to verify whether the set is an ellipsoid.

Thesis title: Application of genetic algorithms to optimize the search strategy

Stochastic search strategies provide standard and widely applied approximate description of foraging strategies. The work is focused on the examination of the stochastic search strategies by use of genetic algorithms. First, we have discussed biological and computer foundations of genetic algorithms. Next, using genetic algorithms we have constructed optimal stochastic search strategies. Finally, we have extended standard search problem by dynamics of resources and learning. In such a model, not blind search strategies can outperform stochastic search strategies.


2009 MSc in Mathematics

Thesis title: Application of neural networks in regression analysis

A Neural Network is an information processing paradigm that is inspired by the way biological nervous systems, such as the brain, process information. The work is focused on development of algorithm which based on input data set can recognize the type of the curve (we can differ the logarithmic, exponential, linear and quadratic function on the plane) and then perform accurate regression: least square algorithm (in case of linear and quadratic function) or non-linear regression (for other functions).
